Academics
Colgate students can choose from among 51 majors. The programs span the divisions of humanities, natural sciences and mathematics, social sciences, and university studies. In each, students have many opportunities to study abroad. They also can participate directly with faculty in a variety of projects that include senior research tutorials, independent studies, honors projects, summer field trips, and student-initiated research.
Campus
Colgate is in the village of Hamilton, which is about 10 miles from the geographic center of New York state. The area is ideal for biking and running in the rolling hills of the Chenango Valley and hiking and skiing in the nearby Adirondack Mountains.
Cooperstown, with its famed Baseball Hall of Fame, Farmers’ Museum, and Glimmerglass Opera, is less than an hour away, as is the city of Syracuse with attractions such as Syracuse Stage, Everson Museum, and Syracuse Symphony.
Campus Life
Colgate is a community where living and learning are closely intertwined. The university offers diverse housing options and a forward-thinking residential education program that promotes student self-governance and active citizenship. There is an incredible array of activities and strong support systems in place for students.
Athletics
Colgate offers many opportunities to participate in challenging intercollegiate athletics. Student-athletes compete at the very highest level of NCAA Division I sports. There are numerous club and intramural sports to take part in.
The recreational facilities are a top-notch fitness center, a climbing wall, courts for tennis, racquetball, squash and handball, batting cages, Olympic size and 25-meter swimming pools, a skating rink, bowling alley, and a sports medicine center.
Outdoors, students may take advantage of tennis courts, fitness trails, the Seven Oaks golf course (one of Golf Digest's top five college courses), trap range, softball complex, a boat house on Lake Moraine, and a 10k cross-country trail system.
Community Service
Most Colgate students participate in some kind of community service during their time here. Service is sometimes an extension of the classroom itself.
The university offers an incredible range of possibilities to students, from ecotourism projects in the Adirondacks, to performing children's plays in New York City, to working at the Moscow Salvation Army — and that's just scratching the surface.
Study Abroad
Year after year, Colgate ranks among the top baccalaureate institutions for the number of students who study abroad.
Colgate offers more than 20 semester-long off-campus study programs led by Colgate faculty, extended study courses that integrate several weeks of off-campus travel, and advice on participating in study abroad programs offered by other universities.
